Bloody Mary, a Drinkable Salad

There are a million reasons why a person "should" drink a Bloody Mary but for me...there are three.

1. They're delicious

2. They're good for me (hello tomato juice)

3. I can drink them whenever I want to

 

Lets expand on these wonderful excuses.

 

They're delicious -  tomato juice combined with zippy horseradish and Worcestershire sauce is liquid heaven. My mouth is watering as I write. Add some lemon to balance and brighten and oh my...

 

The good for you part - you've been living under a rock if you didn't know tomato juice was good for you (you knew this, right??). Horseradish sneaks in and a quick google search will show you that this guy's got so many health benefits it can practically raise the dead. Just kidding but...there are some very healthy ingredients in this drinkable salad. How healthy you want this Bloody Mary to be is all dependent on what you want to stick in the cup along with the drink. Mind you, I'd suggest skipping the fried foods and bacon, and urge you to think fresh and fermented veggies instead.

 

Drink them whenever - this one should be almost self-explanatory. Bloody Marys are known for being a brunch drink or an early in the morning hangover cure. I happen to like them on a lazy weekend day, the perfect thing for having friends over for brunch, or sitting on the patio and enjoying a solo brunch (sunshine required).

 

There you go. All the reasons you need for imbibing in this drinkable salad. Enjoy and be sure to let us know how you doctor yours up.

 

 

 

 

Bloody Mary Recipe

Instructions

  • 3/4 cup tomato juice

  • 3 ounces vodka

  • 2 TB gut shots (sauerkraut brine), pickle juice or some kind of fermented liquid

  • 2 TB vegan Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 TB fresh lemon juice

  • 2 tsp hot sauce, or to taste

  • 2 tsp horseradish

  • 1/2 tsp sugar

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • quick pickles, carrots, celery, olives, tomatoes, lemon slices, etc.

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients into a jar and shake to combine. Pour into two glasses and add pickles, carrots, celery etc.

  2. Sit on the patio and enjoy.
